Rublev Glass Mullers are handmade by artisans using borosilicate laboratory glass, which is 40% harder, more heat resistant, and offers better clarity than soda-lime glass. The bulbous handle is specially formed to provide a comfortable grip to ease fatigue when grinding large amounts of pigment. The bottom of the glass muller is ground perfectly flat and sandblasted to provide an excellent grinding surface.

Use the muller on a slab of marble or granite (ideally porphyry) or a thick sheet of tempered glass to grind and disperse pigments and other materials into a painting medium. The grinding surface must first be prepared by sandblasting or roughening the surface with 100-grit silicon carbide with the muller. Both surfaces of the muller and the grinding slab should be re-textured periodically after use. To disperse pigments in a painting medium, place a small quantity of powdered pigment on the grinding surface and work in oil or water a little at a time with a spatula until a stiff paste is formed. Begin grinding the paste in circular motions until the paste has a smooth consistency. It is unnecessary to bear down with your weight on the muller since the idea here is to disperse by shear forces rather than grind pigment.

The bulb-type muller is best when you want to grip the muller in your palm facing down towards your work area. The size of the muller depends on the amount of paint you want to make in a single session. The larger the size, the more paint you can make.
