Paper/Underpinning/Markmaking for Pastel Drawing
Let’s delve into making a pastel drawing!
This class takes place IN PERSON on Saturday, February 28, 12-4pm our store at 1490 17th st in San Francisco, CA. Please contact nathaniel@archsupplies.com with any questions regarding workshops!
There are so many choices - this includes papers as well as process and markmaking. I’ll be working with a small group of participants (no more than 10) who have experience- or not- with pastels and would like to explore options. I will start the workshop with a demo and examples. Then using three different kinds of pastel paper, three different underpinnings, and three different types of markmaking, we will build an image and compare results at the end.
Before the Workshop:
• PRIOR to the workshop: I’ll send an online image gallery and handouts
At the Workshop you’ll be supplied with:
• Use of Richeson Hand-rolled Pastels
• 3 sheets of varied papers
• Use of watercolors, charcoal, brushes
All students will receive 15% off art supplies on the day of the class.
About Diane:
Diane Olivier lives and works in San Francisco. Born in Rhode Island, she has been a resident of California since 1990 and taught full time at City College of San Francisco from 1991-2020 teaching basic, intermediate and figure drawing. Every spring she hosts several one week drawing workshops abroad to a wide variety of locations with sketchbooks and pastels in hand.

ARCH CLASS DISCLAIMER/CANCELLATION POLICY
NO refunds will be issued within 7 days of a class's scheduled start. We understand that things come up, but we have to adhere to this policy in order to support our staff and guest educators. Some special exceptions can be made with partial refunds and credits for future classes. More than 7 days before the class, please reach out to nathaniel@archsupplies.com to request a refund.
Please sign up for classes as early as possible, at least a week in advance allows us to continue with scheduled classes, and avoid any cancellations. Classes are first come, first serve. We cannot hold seats.
PHOTOGRAPHY CONSENT NOTICE
Photography, video, and arts and crafts occur at our store. All present at our classes are subject to photography, video, or artistic depiction. All are subject to ARCH photography being shared in marketing material, on our Instagram, website, etc.
TRANSPORTATION
ARCH is easily accessible by public transportation. The 22 Fillmore and 55 Dogpatch both stop two blocks away at 16th and Wisconsin. Public transit is recommended as parking in the area is mostly time restricted and may require you to leave the class to re-park your car.
PARKING
Hourly parking is available surrounding the store and Jackson park. We recommend arriving in the neighborhood early to secure parking. Please look closely at surrounding parking signs to ensure your needed length of parking.
FOOD AND AMENITIES
Unless your class or instructor notes otherwise, please do not bring food and drinks into the store (water bottles are OK), please reach out if you need an exception or accommodation for dietary or medical needs. There are a number of local cafes and restaurants surrounding the store if you want to visit them during class break - here are some of our recommendations within walking distance:

ARCH is wheelchair accessible, and has a public restroom. Our store is kid and pet friendly, but must be left at home during classes. Trained service animals are of course welcome to accompany their person.
