The lid flips up to empty the shavings. Body is plastic containing a metal sharpener with stainless steel blades. Additional blades can be purchased.
Step 1: insert pencil in the number one hole, only the wood is sharpened. You will feel it "stop" when there is no longer tension in the pencil.
Step 2: Insert the pencil in the number 2 hole. Now only the lead is being precisely shaped. The automatic stop prevents lead waste. Two spare blades are also integrated in the container when the blades get dull.
